Surprisingly few companies manufacture both monitor speakers and headphones. Focal is a notable exception, having introduced the Spirit Professional headphones a little over a year ago as a studio-focused model to sit alongside their highly rated range of studio monitors. By any standards, the results are a great success. At £239, the Spirit Professionals are priced towards the higher end of the range for closed-back models, but the sound is exceptionally clear, neutral and revealing for the price point.

The memory foam used in the Spirits’ earpieces is an unusual touch, lending them a different feel to most headphones. The main benefit, though, is in isolation – both in terms of blocking out ambient noise and avoiding spill from the headphones. If you ever need to work in areas with substantial background noise or often record with mics and want to monitor without running the risk of picking up the headphone mix in your recordings, the Spirit Professionals should be high on your list.
For your money you also get a foam-lined storage case plus a choice of straight or coiled cables. The excellent build quality of the Spirit Professionals hints at Focal’s extensive experience in the world of pro audio.
