The iconic HD25, originally released in 1988 as a broadcast headphone for film and TV use, is as close to an industry standard pair of headphones as you’ll find these days. It’s a staple of DJ booths around the world, but it’s also reasonably well suited to production. There are better headphones for production, that’s impossible to deny, but if you’re only buying one pair and you want some all-rounders, HD25s will do a reasonable job for production on the move or in situations where you can’t make much noise.
The HD25s appear fairly flimsy at first glance; they’ve got a cheap-and-cheerful moulded plastic construction with minimal concessions to appearance. The exposed wires, the visible pivot point on the swivelling ear cup and the basic padding might not suggest that these are sturdy headphones, but, in practice, they’re surprisingly resilient. Throw them in a DJ bag, kick them around the studio, accidentally sit on them – chances are they’ll survive much more abuse than you expect.

If you do manage to break anything, one of the strong points of the HD25s is Sennheiser’s provision of spare parts. Every single element of the HD25s is available as a replacement part, meaning that if you do happen to break anything, it’s easily replaced. The modular construction makes life even easier in that respect.
Their sound is loud and punchy, perhaps a little on the brash side, but accurate enough for most basic studio tasks. You probably wouldn’t want to mix a track on them in an ideal world, but the same goes for all the closed-back models here.
The new HD8, released last year, is Sennheiser’s successor to the HD25, with a more luxurious build quality and tweaked sound signature, but at £300 they’ll set you back a lot more than the HD25s. We’d stick with the old faithfuls.
Note that the HD25 SP is a cheaper model with different drivers and slightly inferior sound quality. The 1-II model is the one to go for.
