AKG have made everything from microphones to spring reverbs over the years, but they’re particularly good at making open-backed headphones. The 712 Pros, introduced around 18 months ago, are some of the latest in a long line of impressive open models. Based on the extremely popular K702 model, the 712s are updated with increased bass response (one of the few weaknesses of the 702s) and a clearer, more revealing sound.
The characteristic brightness of many AKG headphones is present here, but it’s not harsh or overbearing. Instead, it’s a kind of clinical accuracy that allows you to focus in on elements of the mix with ease. That clarity extends all the way down to the bottom end, allowing you to make critical decisions about low-frequency mix elements.

We’ve recommended AKG’s K240s as an entry-level open headphone choice, but if you like the sound of the cheaper model you’ll love the K712s.
