Next, let’s take a look at the pads. Pads have very little dynamic content and occupy a large chunk of the frequency range, making them a little problematic:
Sounds like this may occasionally benefit from a little reverb, but most of the time you’ll find that stereo delay works better, and with less chance of cluttering the mix.
This can be a good approach for other longer, more sustained elements and works even better if the delay time is subtly modulated by an LFO, adding movement and thickness:
Compare this with a long hall reverb, which is nowhere near as effective:
The arpeggio triggers a short pulse of synth higher up the frequency range, which means we can get away with applying some longer, washier reverb (a ‘hall’ treatment) if we want to create a more epic feel:
