The ‘Micrashell’ is a virus-shielded PPE suit to satisfy the needs of nightlife, live events and entertainment industries”.

Design studio Production Club have announced a PPE suit design that allows socialising without distancing. The company are a multi-disciplinary design studio who have previously worked with The Chainsmokers and Skrillex. The Micrashell is a protective suit and helmet design with an air filtration system to provide protection from air-borne infection. In an interview with CDM, Production Club’s Head of Innovations, Miguel Risueño said the design was “speculative and imaginative in nature”. The company are currently working on a prototype.

Wireless Comms

The suit comes kitted out with smartphone integration, camera and in-built voice communication, sound system and audio processing. Users will be able to drink or vape whilst wearing the suit using the suit’s canister-based ‘supply system’. The wireless communication system provides wearers with different options to select who they interact with. Users can choose to speak with everyone, certain groups (such as your contacts) or specific individuals.

According to the Production Club website, the Micrashell consists of an air-tight ‘top-suit’ and helmet. This leaves the user to “wear their normal clothes, use the toilet and engage in intercourse without being exposed to respiratory risks”.

Music and Audio

Perhaps most interestingly for the music industry is the suit’s internal speaker system. It would allow users to control the audio levels of different sound sources individually. Production Club also envisages three listening modes. Users would be able to listen to a direct stream of the performer or DJ, or a stream that emulates what the music would sound like in the room based on psychoacoustics. A third mode produces audio from the suit’s embedded external microphone. Finally, ‘contact bass speaker cones’ in the back of the suit transmit sub 150hz frequencies through direct bodily contact.
