“When I got back home and played it, my grandma thought I was possessed…” The Venezuelan-born duo run us through their formative records.
What’s the first record you ever bought?
Sergio: The first album I bought, I think it was Metallica’s black album on cassette or Nirvana’s Nevermind. I can’t recall it well, but as a kid I was a huge fan of that.
Israel: In fact, it was something like Sergio. It was my 10th birthday and my grandma took me to the mall to buy my present so I went to the record shop and grabbed AC/DC – Back In Black
. When I got back home and played it, my grandma thought I was possessed, so she called my Dad to take me to a child psychologist. Something was wrong with me, as the other kids around used to listen to Enrique y Ana (some latin shitty music for kids).
The first time you remember hearing electronic music?
Sergio: Electronic music as such was probably circa 1997, and it was commercial dance music of that time. Probably on a more related angle to what I’m involved with today, from 2002 or 2003 on.
Israel: It was around 1995 and my girlfriend (today my wife) used to work in a fashionable clothing store, so the music they had there was super new to Europe. One day I went to see her and heard Paul Van Dyk’s 45 RPM
. It was an awakening to another sound for me.
The last track of the night?
Sergio: Junior Boys – ‘Like a Child (Carl Craig Remix)’. For me it’s the perfect end for a night – one of Carl Craig’s finest works! Plus I’m a huge fan of Junior Boys. I think it’s one of the few remixes which accomplishes being better than the original.
Israel: Totally agree with my Boe! I would add DJ Koze – ‘Mariposa’.
