u-he has released the long-awaited Zebra 3. We first noticed it was in development way back in November 2022, but it wasn’t until December 2025 that lucky beta testers got to put it through its paces. First impressions were great, and it’s developed even further since then. Now the wait is finally over for the rest of us.

Described as a “reimagining” of their “wireless modular software synthesizer”, this powerful synth retains the familiar four-lane, grid-based system of its predecessor but adds all new module types, an overhauled drag-and-drop interface, and a host of new features for both enhanced sound quality and scope.

For a start, Spline-based morphing oscillators are used as both sound- and modulation sources. This means that oscillator signals are treated as actual curves within the plugin (rather than simple point-to-point segments) which can reduce sonic artifacts.

Zebra’s new FM oscillators offer optional through-zero operation, which can help keep stable pitch and result in more controlled FM-tones, especially under extreme modulation.

On the sound-design front, there are nine different noise types and 13 filter models – each with up to 12 different responses each – offering huge possibilities.

Likewise, modal synthesis hugely expands the range of sounds Zebra can produce. This physical modelling feature – showcased in a recent Synth Secrets – uses resonators to transform sounds into highly-convincing, real-world sounds such as physical drums or bells.

This unconventional sonic character theme also extends to the ring modulation, where Bode-style frequency shifting allows more ghostly and ethereal tones than standard multiplication-based ring mod.

And finally, the polyphonic stereo EQ / resonator offers powerful, per-note tone-shaping capabilities such as EQ and physical-sounding tuned resonances, which can be applied across the stereo field.

Other key highlights include:

  • Two rendering modes: wavetable (up to 16x unison) or additive (up to 1024 partials)
  • Spectral distortion modifiers for inharmonic and percussive sounds
  • Ladder, Cascade, State Variable, Allpass / Phaser filter models
  • Unified spline editor shared between oscillators and envelopes (with copy/paste)
  • FM oscillators with two operators and an audio input as a third operator
  • Noise and Exciter modules for realistic transient and physical modellingComb filters with ‘reverb’ mode for polyphonic rooms
  • Vector mixer for morphing between four sources with loopable XY motion
  • Mod Math module for combining and transforming modulation signals
  • Adaptive interface, so that only in-use modules appear in the racks
  • 1,200+ factory presets
  • Support for MPE and microtuning via both TUN files and MTS-ESP

Astonishingly, Zebra 3 is the first new full version in nearly two decades. Zebra 2 – still available for €99 as Zebra Legacy – was first released in 2007 and has been steadily upgraded over the years.

And it’s worth noting that Zebra 3 is an all-new, from-the-ground-up synth, so don’t expect backwards capability with previous versions.

Zebra 3 is available now for macOS, Windows, and Linux in CLAP, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats. Owners of Zebra 2 can upgrade for €30 while everyone else can get it for €249.

Anybody who purchased a Zebra 2 license before November 1st 2022 (i.e. before Zebra Legacy was introduced) should check My Licenses for upgrade options. Everyone else can get it for €249.
