The new model retains the expressive capabilities of the original Osmose while increasing the range for two-handed play and complex compositions.

Following the much-lauded reception of its groundbreaking 49-key Osmose synthesiser, Expressive E has announced the launch of the Osmose 61 – a new model featuring a full five-octave keybed. The update adds an additional octave for greater performance and compositional flexibility, while preserving the core expressive features that defined the original.

Available now, the Osmose 61 is priced at $1999 / €1999 and will be sold through Expressive E’s website and authorised distributors. The unit is assembled in a new company-owned facility in Poland, marking a shift toward in-house European production.

Expanded Format For Enhanced Performance

The Osmose 61 features a 61-key version of Expressive E’s patented 3D keybed, offering musicians more space for two-handed techniques, live arrangements, and broader harmonic exploration. The model retains the multidimensional control response that supports pitch bend, aftertouch, pressure glide, and vibrato on a per-note basis, compatible with MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) workflows.

The EaganMatrix sound engine, developed by Haken Audio, remains central to the instrument, enabling a range of synthesis types including physical modelling, FM, and subtractive synthesis. With 580 factory presets and support for up to 2048 user presets, the Osmose 61 is performance-ready out of the box.

Composer Hans Zimmer, among others, has used the instrument in high-profile projects, including the score for Dune: Part Two.

Software Ecosystem and Firmware Updates

Expressive E has also continued to expand Osmose’s software environment – one of the few downsides to using it previously. The company now offers its own plugins, such as Soliste – a physically modelled solo string engine – and Noisy 2, a noise-driven dual-layer synth. Additionally, partnerships with developers such as U-He, KiloHearts, and Synapse Audio provide further sound design options via the Expressive Suites.

Future updates will include mini-synths designed to simplify programming within the EaganMatrix interface, making complex sound design more approachable for a wider range of users. Regular firmware upgrades are expected to improve DAW integration and overall workflow.

Manufacturing Moves to Europe

With the opening of its Polish factory, Expressive E has moved Osmose production out of China and brought it entirely in-house. The facility handles design, assembly, and quality assurance, allowing the company to maintain tighter control over production standards and logistics.

This shift is intended to support long-term product development and scalability, as Expressive E continues to grow its ecosystem of expressive instruments and tools.
