“Deep, varied, rhythmic and punchy.” Kalyma introduces himself.

Who are you?

Hi, my name is Marc aka Kalyma. I was born in Freiburg, south Germany, in 1989, and then raised in Gran Canaria for 13 Years. My mum (a teacher) moved to Spain in order to live with my Spanish dad (a ship captain). Since 2012, I’ve been studying sound design in Berlin, which I will finish this year.

What do you sound like?

My sound is techy, punchy and a combination of analogue sounds from synthesisers and organic percussion. I like to work with vocals and ethnic sounds as well.

Why should we listen to you?

If you like a deep, varied, rhythmic and punchy sound for the dancefloor, you should check me out!

What have you released so far? What else have you got coming out in the near future?

My debut release ‘Sacrosanct’ was on my own label SOLIDE, which I run with my good friends Myny and D.Y.A. from my hometown. I was quite stoked by the good response I got, especially from the whole Keinemusik Crew, which also means a lot to me, because I really like their producing style and how they run their label.

My second release coming this year, also on SOLIDE, is ‘Can You Reach’.

After the Connected release I will focus again more on my own label and start producing for this platform.

What song sums you up? Why?

Hard to answer. So much interesting music out there I dig.

What or who is your biggest influence and why?

Musically, I grew up learning the piano and the basics of the musical language. My father’s vinyl collection, which was mainly the Beatles and my personal favourite musician of all time Michael Jackson, got me in touch with and grew my interest in music.

Living in Berlin, I got more and more inspiration going to clubs, DJing, partying and talking with other producers and friends about new and different styles of electronic music. Of course, my sound gets influenced by the ‘harder’ techno scene in Berlin and I’m open to catching the elements I like for my own productions.

Where can we hear your music?

My main platforms are SoundCloud and Facebook. But also Apple Music and Spotify of course.

Where will you be in five years’ time?

I’m a big fan of clubs and it would be awesome to travel to the different venues in Europe and US, to play my own music and the songs I am in love with, and to share it with the ravers out there. Playing some bigger events like BPM, for example. Sonar hopefully, too…

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I circumnavigated my hometown Gran Canaria by foot, with a car, a boat and a little plane.

Kalyma’s ‘Lay Down’ is out now on Connected. Find him on Facebook and SoundCloud.
