A somewhat surprising acquisition between two companies at different ends of the producer spectrum.

Splice, a leading music creation platform, has agreed to acquire the acclaimed orchestral sound studio Spitfire Audio for approximately $50 million as reported in The Financial Times. According to the announcement on Spitfire’s site, Splice is seeking to integrate high-quality, royalty-free samples and cutting-edge technology to revolutionize how music is made, particularly with the use of artificial intelligence.

AI a major part of the conversation

Splice has been developing AI-powered tools – such as Splice Create, where users can build stacks based on genre, mood, or even a vocal performance captured on their own phone. Splice’s CEO, Kakul Srivastava, expressed her excitement about merging Splice’s AI discovery engine with Spitfire Audio’s sound technology, stating, “We have such a shared passion for the creators we serve, and now we can bring the best of both worlds to our users.”

Srivastava emphasized that Splice is aiming to offer something unique in the AI-driven music creation space. “Simplistic AI tools where you type in a prompt and a song comes out? Most musicians don’t want to make music that way,” she explained. “AI will enable artists to do things they couldn’t do before, like merging instruments in new ways to create novel sounds. We’re still figuring it out, but the possibilities are endless.”

As Srivastava noted, “It’s about giving creators the freedom to explore sounds in ways they never could before. With Spitfire’s library and Splice’s AI technology, the future of music creation is brighter than ever.”

With Splice’s acquisition, the deep library of luxurious Spitfire sounds, recorded with renowned institutions like the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Abbey Road Studios, will now presumably be available to Splice users and on Splice Create. And if you are a Spitfire user and concerned what this means for you, there are some FAQs here.
