A major update to the long-running mastering package adds three modules, an upgraded Master Assistant and a new IRC limiting mode – with editions ranging from Elements to Advanced and a 10-day trial available.
iBoston-based audio software developer iZotope has announced the release of Ozone 12, the latest iteration of its long-running mastering suite. Released just last week, the new version introduces a range of new tools. At the heart of the update is an emphasis on stem-based processing and artificial intelligence. Ozone 12 now allows users to apply equalization to specific elements – such as vocals, drums, bass, and other instruments – within a stereo file using the new Stem EQ. This function addresses a longstanding limitation in mastering, where engineers typically work with a stereo mix rather than multitrack stems.
A new Bass Control module also enters the suite, promising more consistent low-end across various playback systems. It uses machine learning to analyse and adjust sub-bass and bass frequencies.
Tailored AI
Ozone 12 continues to develop its AI-powered Master Assistant, first introduced in earlier versions. The updated assistant now enables a customisable workflow, allowing users to choose modules, define loudness targets, and apply genre-specific settings. While automation in mastering software is not new, the option to tailor AI suggestions rather than follow a rigid path is likely to appeal to producers looking to maintain creative input.
Another key feature is the new Unlimiter module, designed to restore dynamics in over-compressed audio. This tool highlights a broader industry shift where transparency and dynamic range are increasingly valued alongside loudness, particularly in streaming environments.
The updated IRC 5 mode for the suite’s Maximizer component aims to improve clarity without introducing artifacts like pumping or distortion – common issues in brickwall limiting. This aligns with ongoing demands for loud masters that still retain musical detail.
Pricing and availability
Ozone 12 is available in three versions – Elements ($55), Standard ($219), and Advanced ($499). The Advanced edition includes 21 individual plugins and is also bundled in Music Production Suite 8, a larger production package retailing for $799.
